The Broadway revival of Promises, Promises, starring Kristin Chenoweth and Sean Hayes, has set a closing date. The musical comedy will play its final performance on January 2, 2011, after 30 preview and 291 regular performances at the Broadway Theatre. Headliners Chenoweth and Hayes and stars Tony Goldwyn, Dick Latessa and Molly Shannon (who will make her Broadway debut when she takes over for Tony winner Katie Finneran on October 12), are all extending their contracts by a week to finish out the run.
Based on the 1960 Academy Award-winning Billy Wilder film The Apartment, Promises, Promises tells the story of the Consolidated Life Insurance Company and Chuck Baxter (Hayes), one of its charming young employees. In an effort to advance his career, Chuck lends executives his apartment for their extramarital romantic trysts. But things become slightly complicated when Chuck discovers Fran Kubelik (Chenoweth), the object of his affection, is involved with one of the executives (Goldwyn).
In addition to the aforementioned stars, the production, directed and choregraphed by Rob Ashford, features a cast of 27 that includes Brooks Ashmanskas, Helen Anker, Peter Benson, Seán Martin Hingston, Ken Land, Cameron Adams, Ashley Amber, Wendi Bergamini, Nikki Renee Daniels, Simone De La Rue, Sarah Jane Everman, Chelsea Krombach, Keith Kuhl, Marty Lawson, Ian Liberto, Matt Loehr, Mayumi Miguel, Brian O'Brien, Sarah O'Gleby, Adam Perry, Megan Sikora, Matt Wall, Ryan Watkinson and Kristen Beth Williams.
The show is a box office hit and producers expect to recoup its investment in the coming weeks. It received four Tony Award nominations, including Best Featured Actress winner Finneran. A tour is in the works.
